FabLab

A "FabLab" is a workshop providing users with tools for making objects and equipped with computer assistance. At ENSEA, the FabLab is a versatile prototyping space available to students.

A space for freedom and experimentation

The FabLab is a place where students can transform their ideas into real objects. They can iterate, make mistakes, start again, and learn from failure. It's also a real opportunity to build a portfolio and gain distinctive experience that is valued by recruiters.

Cédric Bleimling - Director of DSTEI - Directorate of Technical Support for Innovative Teaching

Every day, ENSEA students meet at the FabLab to imagine, design and bring their projects to life using the available machines:

  • Twelve 3D printers
  • A large format laser cutter
  • A vinyl printer
  • A thermoforming machine
  • A heat press
  • An embroiderer
  • A fiber laser engraver
  • A reflow oven
  • A laminator
  • Several welding stations...

Support and presence in training sessions

The most complex machines in the FabLab require training to be used safely. This is where facilitators come in; these are students employed under contract and trained on the FabLab equipment, who manage space reservations and supervise machine use, themselves supported by members of the DSTEI.

The FabLab is also part of ENSEA's teaching approach, both in its curricula (such as the MAKER engineering course options and Human-Centered Design, as well as in the Bachelor Human-IT projects) and when it comes to introducing engineering to external audiences, such as during Open Days at the institution or during visits by middle school students (Explorasciences, Girls in STEM, etc.).

An integral part of the Makerspace: learning through experimentation and design

The Makerspace at ENSEA is a collection of spaces dedicated to the design of physical objects and to hands-on, iterative learning for students. It comprises:

  • La Factory : printed circuit board manufacturing
  • The mechanical workshop : metalworking, welding, and project support
  • The FabLab
